Coastal Voices – in development for 2017

Coastal Voices is in development for a major new production in May 2017 as part of Poole’s EU Maritime Day Festival.

It’s still early days, but we are delighted that Howard Moody has agreed to be our irrepressible Musical Director again, with (subject to funding!) the promise of guest artists, mentoring for regional choirs and a whole new Choral Festival weekend along the way. The centrepiece of the repertoire will be John Surman’s “Songs for a Coastal Wind” as performed by the Weymouth Coastal Voices in 2012. Again, subject to funding, we are planning to commission a new first movement by John, and a fanfare style opener by Howard, so plenty of both new and pre-loved material to get your teeth into!

Work is already underway to raise the funds required, and if successful, we aim to launch the project in May 2016. Rehearsals will start at the Lighthouse in September 2016, with concert and outdoor performances in April and May 2017. We’re operating a world away from the financial comfort that London 2012 offered us before, and this time we are hoping you will help us realise the scale and impact of the project:

  • Looking for that “money-can’t-buy” present? Why not pledge support to the CV commission by Howard Moody and have your name inscribed at the front of the published score.
  • Would your workplace welcome the opportunity to support this large scale community event? Benefits include a choral workshop in your workplace, plus your corporate profile reflected in the project’s marketing and souvenir print, online and social media profiles.
  • Over 50% of feedback received in 2012 suggested singers would be happy to pay a small charge to take part again. We are introducing an optional fee (which will also give you an exclusive project T shirt, printed scores and souvenir programmes) with the potential for you to add top-up donations to the project if you wish. This will allow us to reach new participants and communities across Poole and Dorset, and widen participation in the event to its fullest potential. Please be assured that no one will be excluded from the project by not being able to pay, but others may be able to pay what they think it’s worth.

You can register your interest in any of these means of support at or drop us a line at

And if you’ve forgotten what it was all about back in the summer of 2012, this slideshow might jog your memory.

We hope you’re as excited as we are to get this project back up and running. If you have any comments or suggestions you would like to make to help things on their way, please get in touch via or through the contact page here on the website.
